The blackface combo era was introduced with a flurry of sometimes confusing name changes and speaker configurations. For vintage Fender® amps (NOT Reissues!) from the original blackface and silverface eras which have two power tubes (6L6 or 6V6). The blackface Bandmaster is therefore ideal for those who look for a pure Fender clean sound without making ones ears bleed. The blackface and silverface Bandmasters are medium/big sounding amps with a flexible speaker impedance of 4 ohm, allowing anything between one and four speakers (8 ohm each) to be connected via the main and/or external speaker jack.

Originally the Blackface amps came first - 1963 to 1968 - and the Silverfaces later - 1968 to 1981*. Each model remained basically the same in terms of size and speaker configuration, but the larger models increased in power and some gained extra midrange and master volume controls, and some either a 'pull boost' or 'pull distortion' circuit after about 1972-1976 depending on the model. The silverface amps are surprisingly similar to the coveted Fender blackface line of amps so many blackface mods and tweaks apply to the silverface lineup. It's pretty easy to "blackface" these amps for a full generational regression. I usually prefer switchable mods that allow me to go back to the amp's original circuit and tone. Later Fender blackface and silverface tube amps should NOT have 6L6, 6L6G, 6L6GA or 6L6GB installed, due to higher operating voltages and currents.
